Adoption Benefits in Canada
EI Top-ups
· Pfizer Canada Inc. - tops up EI to 100% for 17 weeks. This matches what is offered to those on maternity leave. Unknown whether two-week waiting period for EI is covered.
· Shoppers Drug Mart - tops up EI to 75% for 10 weeks for both adoptive parents and for biological fathers taking a parental leave. Biological mothers who are employees receive maternity leave top-up for 17 weeks. Salary is paid for two-week EI waiting period.
· Eli Lilly - tops up EI to 100% for six weeks. This matches what is offered to those on maternity leave. Unknown whether two-week waiting period for EI is covered.
· New Brunswick Power - tops up EI to 100% for 10 weeks. This matches what is offered to those on maternity leave. Unknown whether two-week waiting period for EI is covered.
· National Post - tops up EI to 80% for 17 weeks. This matches what is offered to those on maternity leave. Unknown whether two-week EI waiting period is covered.
· Province of Ontario (non-unionized and unionized staff) - tops up EI to 93% for 10 weeks. Also pays 93% of salary during two-week waiting period. This matches what is offered to those on maternity leave.
· City of Toronto (non-unionized staff) - tops up EI to 75% for 35 weeks. This matches what is offered to those on parental leave generally; there is no distinction between parental leave and adoption leave in terms of benefits. No compensation for two-week EI waiting period.
· Aliant Telecom - tops up EI to 75% for 10 weeks. No compensation for two-week EI waiting period.
· Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce - tops up EI to 55% for 10 weeks. Pays 95% of salary during two-week EI waiting period.
Expense Reimbursement
· IBM Canada - reimburses 80% of adoption expenses, limited to a maximum of $1,500.00.
· Thomson Canada Limited - reimburses adoption expenses, limited to a maximum of $3,000.00 [this may be in US dollars and the Canadian figure has not been verified].
· Gillette Canada - reimburses adoption expenses, limited to a maximum of $5,000.00, and excluding travel expenses. Employees also receive one week of paid adoption leave.
· Mentor Graphic - reimburses adoption expenses, limited to a maximum of $5,000.00.
· KPMG - reimburses adoption expenses, limited to a maximum of $5,000.00.
· EDS Canada Inc. - reimburses adoption expenses, limited to a maximum of $3,500.00 [this may be in US dollars and the Canadian figure has not been verified].
