Click HERE for the registration form for our 13th annual FCC Toronto Culture Camp, run in conjunction with the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto and held at the Cultural Centre. This year's camp runs from Monday August 20 to Friday August 24. The camp is open to children ages 4 to 11 (note that we have extended the upper age by one year, compared to last year) as well as parents. There are separate programs for children and adults. The theme of this year's camp is the Regions of China - come and learn about the history and cultural traditions of various areas of China, through exploration of food, dance and ethnic minorities. This year's camp includes the popular dumpling making for the adults as well as tea tasting, lectures, mah jong and cooking. For the children, there will be crafts, scroll painting, singing and ribbon dancing, and lots more. If you have any questions about the Culture Camp, please contact Christina Fisher at jmichel2@rogers.com or call her at or call her at 416-565-6759 Hope you can attend! FCC Toronto Board Add Comment Bring your picnic baskets, kites and dogs. Our annual FCC Toronto picnic will be held on Sunday June 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year, the picnic moves back to the Beach area of Toronto, in a great location near the children’s playground. Click HERE for a flyer with more details about the picnic. There is no need to pre-register for this event, but we are asking you to RSVP to Johan Vink if you are planning on attending so that we can better manage the numbers (to make sure we have enough, but not too many, hot dogs!) FCC Toronto and FCC Charitable Fund’s annual general meetings are also held at the picnic, so please drop by and say hello. Hope to see you there! FCC Toronto Board FCC Toronto invites you to the screening of The Invisible Red Thread, a new Canadian documentary on adoption from China, on Sunday May 27, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the S. Walter Stewart Library in the east end of Toronto (Coxwell and Mortimer area, north of Danforth). Click HERE for a copy of the registration form and details about the screening. Additional details about the film can be found at http://theinvisibleredthread-themovie.com. The film is suitable for adults and children ages 10 and up. After the film, we will have an opportunity for a question and answer session with Vivian and her family, who will be joining us for the screening along with some of the film crew. Film Synopsis: In 1995 a newborn baby girl was found on the steps of a hospital in the Chinese city of Jiujiang. She was handed over to an orphanage where they named her Li Bao, but six months later she was adopted by a Canadian couple and renamed Vivian. Vivian describes herself as a typical North American teenager, but who might Vivian have been if she hadn’t been one of the international adoptees, and was adopted instead by a Chinese family? The Invisible Red Thread follows Vivian from Canada to China as she discovers her birthplace and the life she might have led if she’d remained there. Together with her adoptive father, Vivian returns to China’s southern Jiangxi Province where she meets Shumin Zhu, a fourteen-year-old girl who was also abandoned as an infant, but adopted by a couple in rural China. Vivian and Shumin compare their lives and discover surprising similarities and differences. Through Vivian and Shumin’s stories, The Invisible Red Thread explores the ripple effects of China’s One Child Policy across two continents and the ties that still connect Vivian to China. Copies of the video will be available for purchase at the screening. Please join us for this very special event. Attendance is by advance registration only. REGISTER BY TUESDAY MAY 22. FCC Toronto Board Every year FCC Toronto is proud to offer members a new t-shirt design commemorating our families and China (and often, Chinese New Year in particular). The t-shirts have always been designed by one of our Board members. This year we would like to turn the design of the next t-shirt over to the members. Beginning January 23, 2012, we will be celebrating the Year of the Dragon. We’d like to invite you to submit a t-shirt design that we will use on our 2012 t-shirt. If you would like to participate in our contest, please take the following design parameters into consideration: Design: · be creative and use your imagination; but the design must include a Chinese dragon; the dragon design should be dramatic, iconic and auspicious, rich in visual potential ·include an explanation for your design, if you require. ·simpler is often better and generally cheaper ·avoid tiny details; they print poorly on t-shirts, if at all Colours: ·two colours works well – the colour of the ink and the colour of the tshirt; should not exceed three colours including the t-shirt colour ·use the t-shiirt itself as the background to the design; solid colour backgrounds that form part of the design are usually too thick when printed and do not wear well Location of Design: ·front, centre of t-shirt Size: ·dependant on design Affordability: ·more colours means more inks, more printing steps and therefore, greater expense For inspiration, there are many great resources and references available. A quick overview of Chinese dragons is available on the internet at "Chinese New Year 2012 - Year of the Dragon" at guy-sports.com. There are also many good books explaining the creation of the Chinese zodiac. One such example is "The Great Race: The Story of the Chinese Zodiac" by Dawn Casey. Submit your design by Friday, November 11, 2011 to Johan Vink at jtmvink@yahoo.com. If you have any questions about the process, contact Johan. Submissions will be reviewed and selected by the Board members. Please note that we necessarily reserve the right to make slight modifications to the design to accommodate printing requirements. We also reserve the right to not use any of the submissions, if we, or the printer, feel that none of the designs will be suitable or cost-effective. Prizes? Yes, there will be something, but we haven’t decided on those yet. For sure, a couple of free t-shirts! Have you ever wanted to learn how to play mahjong?
